The heading encompasses a wide product range — from poultry incubators and animal-feed preparation machines to forestry, horticultural, and bee-keeping equipment, as well as their parts.
Over the eleven-year window, the EU consolidated its position as a major net exporter of this machinery. Export values rose by nearly 50 % to reach €3.07 billion in 2025, and the trade surplus widened to €2.59 billion. Critically, this expansion was driven almost entirely by rising unit prices rather than by volume growth: exported tonnage barely changed, while the average export price climbed by more than 50 %. Imports also grew — by 75 % in value — but from a much smaller base and at a slower pace per unit.
Beyond these aggregate trends, the period saw significant geographic reorientation. Russia lost ground as an export destination, while the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada gained share. On the import side, China emerged as the overwhelmingly dominant supplier, accounting for nearly 40 % of import value by 2025. Within the EU, production tripled and Northern European member states consolidated their comparative advantage in this sector.

Surging values on stagnant volumes: a price-driven market
Export values rose nearly 50 % while tonnage stagnated
EU exports of CN 8436 grew from €2.05 billion in 2015 to €3.07 billion in 2025, a gain of 49.8 %. Yet exported tonnage stood at 345,587 t in 2025, virtually unchanged from 351,528 t in 2015 (−1.7 %). The entire value increase was therefore accounted for by higher prices: the average export unit value rose from €5,830/t to €8,880/t, an increase of 52.3 %.
Import prices, by contrast, grew by only 28.7 % (from €5,064/t to €6,519/t). The divergent price trajectories widened the export–import unit-value gap, signalling that EU producers moved upmarket relative to foreign competitors.

The EU's trade surplus deepened alongside rising production capacity
The EU's trade surplus widened from €1.77 billion to €2.59 billion over the period (+45.8 %). Although imports grew faster in relative terms than exports, the EU's starting position was so dominant — exporting roughly 7.5 times more than it imported in 2015 — that the absolute surplus still expanded.
This strength is underpinned by a remarkable expansion in EU domestic production. According to PRODCOM data, production value nearly tripled, from €1.87 billion to €6.20 billion (+231.6 %), while the number of items produced grew from 2.0 million to 6.7 million units (+237.7 %). The net import reliance, which registers negative values for net exporters, deepened from −33.3 % to −63.8 %, reflecting an even stronger outward orientation. Similarly, export propensity rose from 28.6 % to 45.9 %, and trade intensity climbed from 31.1 % to 49.5 %.
A dramatic 2024 import surge and subsequent reversal revealed competitive pressures
Despite the long-term upward trend, import volumes displayed significant volatility. Total imports peaked at approximately 181,000 t in 2024 — more than three times the 2015 level — before falling back to 73,937 t in 2025. This spike was concentrated in the 843680 subheading ("Agricultural, horticultural, forestry or bee-keeping machinery, n.e.s."), whose import volume surged from 76,784 t in 2023 to 152,450 t in 2024 while its unit price collapsed from €3,051/t to just €1,645/t. The combination of surging volume and collapsing price points to an influx of lower-cost machinery, likely of Chinese origin. The subsequent reversion in 2025 (41,285 t at €6,520/t) suggests the episode was partly anomalous, but it highlights the competitive pressure that Asian producers can exert on the EU market.
The same subheading displayed notable volatility on the export side: in 2021, export volume of 843680 machinery spiked to 177,126 t (up from 115,597 t in 2020), while the unit price dropped to €4,877/t. By 2022, volume had halved to 78,006 t but the price surged to €12,027/t — a pattern consistent with a shift from bulk, lower-value shipments toward higher-value-added exports.
From Russia to the Anglosphere: a geographic realignment of EU trade
The United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada became the EU's priority export markets
The geographic composition of EU exports shifted meaningfully toward English-speaking markets:

The United States remained the single largest non-EU market, with exports growing from €340 million to €590 million. The most striking gains, however, came from the United Kingdom (+106.6 %) and Canada (+147.3 %), both of which roughly tripled their import value from the EU. Norway (+133.4 %) and Mexico (+50.8 %) also posted strong growth.
Russia's export share contracted sharply amid sanctions, while China lost ground
Russia, which was the EU's second-largest export destination in 2015 at €309 million, saw its purchases from the EU fall to €210 million by 2025 (−32.2 %). The data also show that Russian exports peaked at approximately €456 million at some point during the period, implying a decline of over 50 % from that peak. This contraction was concentrated in 2022–2025, following the imposition of EU sanctions related to the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Russia thus dropped from second to fourth place among the EU's export markets.
EU exports to China similarly declined, falling from €75 million to €41 million (−45.5 %). China's share of total EU exports thus dropped from 3.6 % to 1.3 %, suggesting that Chinese domestic producers increasingly serve their own market — and, as the import data show, also compete directly within the EU.
China became the overwhelmingly dominant source of EU imports
On the import side, China's rise was the defining trend. Chinese imports into the EU grew from €80 million to €192 million (+140.2 %), far outpacing the second-largest supplier, the United States, which was essentially flat at €84 million. By 2025, China accounted for approximately 40 % of all EU imports of CN 8436 machinery, up from 29 % in 2015.

Import concentration surged by volume, and supply shocks hit in 2021–2022
The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) for imports by value rose modestly from 2,067 to 2,191 (+6.0 %), but the volume-based HHI jumped from 2,758 to 4,006 (+45.3 %). The divergence between the two measures indicates that China ships large volumes at lower unit prices, concentrating physical supply without proportionally concentrating value. This raises questions about supply-chain vulnerability should Chinese production be disrupted. On the export side, concentration remained low and broadly stable, with the value-based HHI at 654 in 2025 (down slightly from 670 in 2015), reflecting the EU's diversified export base.

The near-doubling of export prices to the UK in a single year is striking and may reflect post-Brexit trade frictions, currency movements, or the general inflationary environment of 2022.
The volatility analysis further highlights Algeria (coefficient of variation 0.98) and China (0.54) as the most volatile export destinations, while US imports into the EU showed the highest volatility on the import side (CV 1.11), followed by Norway (0.85).
Northern Europe leads the upmarket shift
Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy anchor the EU's export base

Finland, Sweden, and Denmark display the strongest export specialisation

By value, the largest segment was 843629 (poultry-keeping machinery), which reached €973 million in exports in 2025, followed by 843680 at €885 million.
Parts subheadings (843699 and 843691) showed moderate price growth of 36–42 % with stable volumes, consistent with steady aftermarket demand. On the import side, the dynamics diverged: while imported 843680 prices rose by 52.2 % (mirroring the export trend), parts of poultry machinery (843691) and poultry incubators (843621) saw import prices decline by 17.5 % and 20.6 % respectively, suggesting that lower-cost foreign suppliers gained share in these niches.
Poultry incubators and brooders emerged as the fastest-growing niche
Among all subheadings, 843621 (poultry incubators and brooders) posted the strongest overall export growth: value more than doubled from €66 million to €141 million (+112.3 %), driven by both a 42.0 % volume expansion (from 7,665 t to 10,887 t) and a 49.4 % price increase (from €8,643/t to €12,918/t). This was the only major segment to register significant volume growth alongside price appreciation, suggesting genuine demand expansion — possibly linked to the modernisation and scale-up of poultry farming in developing markets.
Conversely, animal-feed preparation machinery (843610) showed contrasting dynamics on the import side: import volumes more than doubled (+109.7 %, from 2,747 t to 5,761 t) while prices barely moved (+5.5 %), suggesting that the EU's demand for imported feed-preparation equipment is growing rapidly, possibly outpacing domestic capacity in this niche.
